Shirley Segal Covered and Discovered
Tal Gallery is honored to present
Shirley Siegal's solo exhibition. Siegal is a multidisciplinary artist,
archeologist, curator, and art history lecturer. She exhibits her latest works
of women portraits, representing the various faces of Israeli society. A closer
look shows how with her brush she conveys to the viewer the inner essence of
the character, emphasizing her features thus revealing her hidden inner being. Many of her portraits are women with
head cover, which symbolizes their social or religious ethnic origin. The head
cover, historically imposed on women as a restriction by most religions or
other social convictions, may be perceived in Siegal's paintings as a common
feature that connects and brings women together. The series of small oil paintings made
recently by quick lines drawn on canvas came as a response to the latest events
of terror and hostility from both sides. It is the artist's protest, a manifest
to women-mothers who, by their silent cry, can maybe bring an innocent hope for
a change, an end to the madness of violence. The exhibition also presents earlier
works like the Jerusalem
series (2012-2013) and original series of portraits made on stones (2006-2013).
The stone, a material with natural form and texture, transforms by Siegal's
brush to expressive portraits of realistic faces that seem to be carved by
nature.
